Deborah Melton VIEW PROFILE

Deborah Melton

Deborah Lynn Melton passed away peacefully at her home in Ventnor, New Jersey, on July 2, 2017 at the age of 62.

Debbi was born on March 12, 1955 at George Air Force Base in Victorville, California, the daughter of Harry Calvert Melton and Marjorie Jane (Black) Melton.

Debbi attended Rose Tree - Media schools (PA), graduating from Penncrest High School in 1973 and lettering in field hockey.  She moved to Ocean City, NJ with her family in 1975 and enjoyed working at the Port-O-Call Hotel in Ocean City, Prudential Insurance in Linwood, and the Point Pub in Somers Point.  Most of all, she enjoyed the fun and friendships she had with her co-workers at those places.  Subsequently Debbi worked for many years as the sweetest and friendliest dealer at Resorts, Taj Mahal, and Caesar’s casinos in Atlantic City.  Customers were always impressed and charmed by her kindness and sincerity.

Debbi was special in many ways, but two of most prominent were that she was giving and she was joyous.  She was always thinking of others, helping people out whenever they needed, and finding solutions for their problems.  Debbi was also funny, often silly and goofy, and fun-loving.  Many friends and family members recall her infectious laugh that would suddenly turn many funny moments into scenes of prolonged uncontrollable laughter for all involved.

Family, and keeping family memories alive, were very important to Debbi.  She loved every member of her immediate and extended family unconditionally, and she was a wonderful, loving, and devoted friend.

Debbi loved going to concerts with her partner Tom, and to Broadway shows in New York.  She especially loved Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band.  She had a special talent for waiting at, or even sneaking into, stage doors and getting autographs by displaying her unique style of child-like sweetness, positive energy, and shouting out her love and admiration for the performer.  After following James Brown down a concert venue hallway, she yelled out “I love you, James Brown!” and got him to stop in his tracks, turn around, smile, and gladly sign his autograph for her.  Debbi had that way about her, an infectious happiness and joy in the moment which, no matter how stressed or hurried you were, carried you along with it.

Debbi loved being at the beach in Ocean City, and in her younger years enjoyed the abundant nightlife in the area, especially the Melody Lounge.  She also loved spending time with her extended family at her grandparents’ cottage on the Sassafras River in Maryland: sunning on the floating dock, water-skiing, or eating a family meal at the large dining room table overlooking the river.

Debbi also loved sewing and would always put her talents to use to change and enhance a pattern.

In recent years, Debbi was a regular contributor to many of the talk shows on her favorite radio station, WOND in Atlantic City, NJ.  She was beloved by the talk show hosts and listeners alike for her supportive and detailed research and commentary on the subjects of the day.  The week after her death, several of the WOND radio programs held tribute shows to her.

Debbi is survived by her partner of 34 years, Tom Breuel of Ventnor, New Jersey, and her brother Lee Crosby (“Buck”) Melton of San Francisco, California.

She was predeceased by her parents and by her brother Douglas Black Melton.

A service of Memory and Love for Debbi will be held at Laurel Memorial Park in Egg Harbor Township at 11:30AM on September 23, 2017.  Please visit www.godfreyfuneralhome.com for further details.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Debbi may make a memorial gift to Ocean Conservancy.
